REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder (RBD), also known as Hereditary Encephalopathy, is a neurological disorder identified in Russian Blue cats. It is caused by an autosomal recessive frameshift mutation in the FAM8A1 gene. This hereditary condition appears to affect both neurological function and bladder control. So far (2025), the mutation has only been observed in Russian Blue cats and has not yet been detected in related breeds.
Caractéristiques cliniques
Symptoms of REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder (RBD) in Russian Blue cats typically appear during adolescence or early adulthood, and their severity can vary between individuals. The RBD episodes may progressively worsen over time. At first, episodes may be mild and infrequent, such as brief twitching, sudden movements, or vocalizations during sleep. As the condition progresses, these episodes can become more pronounced and occur more often.
Affected cats may show signs of disturbed REM sleep, including abnormal limb movements or vocalizations during sleep. Episodes may also involve urinary issues, such as urinary retention syndrome, where the cat has difficulty fully emptying its bladder, sometimes leading to overflow incontinence or an enlarged bladder.
