Informations générales

Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a disorder of the heart, which grows too large and becomes unable to pump blood effectively. This can lead to irregular heartbeat and even sudden death. This variant of the disease, found in the Welsh Springer Spaniel, is caused by a dominant mutation to the gene PLN.

Caractéristiques cliniques

Affected dogs appear generally healthy, but are at risk of sudden death from heart failure, generally between two and three years of age. Veterinary examination of cardiac function will reveal ventricular dilation and arrhythmia. While DCM cannot be treated directly, proper medication can support heart function to improve the welfare of affected dogs as long as possible.
