Informations générales

Laryngeal Paralysis (LP) is a disorder of the throat in which the cartilages of the larynx no longer properly function, impeding both breathing and swallowing. This specific form of the disorder, found in the Miniature Bull Terrier and Bull Terrier, has been linked to a mutation on the gene RAPGEF6.

Caractéristiques cliniques

Signs of laryngeal paralysis in dogs vary, but generally include respiratory distress, intolerance to exercise and possibly an impaired or altered voice. Episodes of serious breathing difficulties can potentially be life-threatening, and surgical intervention such as a tracheostomy may be required to provide relief.

Additional Information

The mutation in this test should be considered a risk factor. It is associated with the disorder, but does not necessarily guarantee it.

Hereditary LP is also associated with other neurological disorders.
